Tafo Ahenbronom is an old settlement within the Kumasi Metropolis.
It is home to some 6000 residents predominantly within the low income bracket.
Commercial activity is brisk because of the presence of the Tafo Ahembronom market and a bus terminal which loads to major parts of Kumasi.
The town is however engulfed in filth.
The area is littered with rubbish with their gutters choked with waste.
The only central waste disposal bin in the community is full and running over compelling residents to dump their waste indiscriminately.
The residents who have been speaking to Ultimate News’ Sarah Gyampoh fear an imminent outbreak of diseases if city authorities do nothing about the situation.
A driver recounted, “It is the job of Zoom Lion to collect all the rubbish here. They do it every night but they are unable to collect the rubbish from here. They always tell us their containers are full. Some women intentionally package sacks of rubbish and deposit them here as goods only for you to find out that it is garbage. We are afraid diseases like cholera can breakout in this community.”

A trader was worried, “The KMA takes tolls from us the traders here but nothing is being done about the rubbish here. The sweepers gather heaps of garbage with no one to dispose them off. Whenever the wind blows, it just scatters the garbage everywhere Malaria is surging here because of mosquitoes breeding in the choked drains.”
A resident of the town also indicated that the townfolk are compelled to keep their rubbish in their homes or pour them in the gutters because of a lack of space at the central dumping point.
“People have made up their minds to keep pouring garbage into the gutters no matter how many times we have cleaned them up. We are suffering because our waste collection bin is always full. The vehicle does not come for it and we are forced to carry our rubbish back to our homes.”
The assembly member of Tafo Ahenbronom North electoral area Alex Twum contends he cannot be blamed for the insanitary behaviour of the traders and drivers as according to him; all advice to community members to adhere to sanitary practices appear to have fallen on deaf ears.
He however assured that his outfit will begin working at securing more central dumping bins for the community dwellers.
